Alcohol, sometimes referred to as fire-water or booze, referred to a number of beverages that contained ethanol and octane, and had mind-altering effects on many organic species while in the bloodstream. It was viewed as a mild poison. Some types of alcohol would catch fire if ignited. Operating a vehicle or vessel while under the influence of alcohol was considered very ill-advised.
