The planet Jupiter was so named by astronomers of Ancient Rome after the god Jupiter. The English name Jupiter is an Anglicisation of the Latin name Iuppiter. This word is a compound of two old Latin words; Iuo ('sky') and pater ('father'). Hence Jupiter roughly translates as "sky-father". Juptier is the Roman name for the Greek god, Zeus.
