Joseph Pierre Nuyttens (1885 – 1960) was the Belgian-American artist who illustrated four books by L. Frank Baum in 1911 and 1912. Those books were The Flying Girl and its sequel The Flying Girl and Her Chum, plus Phoebe Daring and the second edition of Annabel. Born in Antwerp, Nuyttens was educated at the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts in both Brussels and Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was made a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold II in 1918. In his artistic career, Nuyttens worked in oils, watercolors, pastels, and etching. He died in a house fire that destroyed many of his works.
