Blood status, known colloquially as blood purity, is the method that witches and wizards of the magical world use to distinguish between those that have different levels of magically-endowed members. Depending on the country, it can result in prejudice towards those who have a large number of Muggles in their families. Wizarding society itself is quite aloof and considers itself inherently superior to Muggle society, who lack the connection that witches and wizards have with magic. In truth, virtually no family is completely free of Muggle ancestry, but that doesn't stop many pure-blood families from claiming the opposite.
