Gurdle was a mole worker who helped construct the Redwall Abbey. Together with four mice he made mortar out of sand, limestone and water to cement the red sandstone blocks which were utilized to build the abbey. He also helped move blocks on a platform to the top of the walls for construction. Gurdle also assisted Columbine in handing out sticks and baskets for the fruit harvest in the Orchard. He gave berry trugs to the Dibbuns so that they could help with the work.
