The Reverend Elija Saturday was the great great grandfather of Doc Saturday. He was a missionary in Fiji in 1867 when he accidentally touched the village's chief's hand. At the time this was a crime punishable by death by ritual cannibalism. After eating Elija, the villagers believed they had angered the shark god, Dakuwaqa, and that their village was placed under the "Saturday curse" ever since then. The Saturdays visited the village while investigating the legend of Dakuwaqa to take part in a ceremonial apology to convince Dakuwaqa to lift the curse.
