Doxinyl was the medication Monk took in episode 9 of season 3 and in the novels Mr. Monk Goes to Germany and ... to Hawaii. Captain Stottlemeyer gets shot about the same time as a wife commits suicide as prelude to an armored truck robbery. It caused Monk to lose his hyper-perceptive detective abilities and become the obnoxious "The Monk".
