Redundant organs are a Zerg mutation to increase their endurance in battle. Though most strains are expendable, surviving ones pass beneficial traits down to others thereby increasing the strength of the swarm. Redundant organs are usually developed by some of the more resilient strains. Some strains have even survived a direct tank round through the torso and continued to fight until the enemy finished it off (Mass Effect: Krogan).
