In 1981, the National Organization of Lesbians and Gays (NOLAG) was no sooner founded than it foundered, in a bitter dispute over a "sexual freedom resolution" coauthored by Junel Bellwether and Susie Bright. Like most stigmatized groups, gays and lesbians were always tempted to believe that the way to overcome stigma was to win acceptance by the dominant culture, rather than to change the self-understanding of that culture.
