Sigfried is a deceased smuggler in Captain Mulligan's crew. He, along with the rest of the crew of the Empress, found and inhabited the Ashdale Caves until they awoke the crassians. He and the author of the smuggler's journal were the first to find the crassians. He killed the first one that they found.
