First Volet'aval was a Jem'Hadar First who fought in the Alpha Quadrant during the Dominion War. He was bred specifically for combat in that war, and was promoted over many older Jem'Hadar to take the position of First aboard his ship. (Star Trek: Sigils and Unions) Ultimately he and his comrades were defeated by the rebel forces. In his last moments, Volet'aval privately admitted to a grudging sort of respect for Cardassian gul Tayben Berat--who in spite of being what a Jem'Hadar or Vorta would consider to be a "defective," had proven his ability as a cunning and innovative fighter.
