Born in Montreal, Canada, Thom released his own self-titled album in 1972. He soon teamed with songwriter Phil Galdston, and they co-wrote the hit "Why Don't We Live Together" for Barry Manilow. The songwriters also recorded as vocalists, as the duo Galdston & Thom, on the 1977 album American Gypsies and the team wrote the songs for the 1983 film D. C. Cab (with Mr. T). Thom has continued to write music for children's television, including the Playhouse Disney animated series Stanley, the PBS revival of Zoom, and Fetch with Ruff Ruffman.
