Born at Frankfort, Kentucky, Rodman graduated from the Naval Academy in 1880. Duty in Yantic, Wachusett, USS Hartford, and Essex, and tours at the Hydrographic Office and at the United States Naval Observatory were followed in 1891 by four years of survey duty along the coasts of Alaska and British Columbia. Admiral Rodman died at Bethesda, Maryland and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
