This was a common Eastern Orthodox tradition in the Russian Empire, which has become virtually extinct in Russia as a result of the official atheism of the former Soviet Union. The specific dishes may differ from country to country, but many of them are universal. As a result of the Nativity Fast, no meat, eggs or milk (including cheese) are allowed during the supper.
