There were several "tangle" technologies in the Vorkosigan Saga: Tanglefields (also spelled tangle-fields), tangle-nets, tangle-cords, and tanglecuffs. All were non-lethal weapons/tools that were designed to bind people to prevent them from trying to escape or to cause other troubles. There was a burning sensation associated with being bound in a tangle-net.
