Marcos was elected a member of the Philippine House of Representatives in the inaugural 1948 election. His political rise was meteoric, becoming the leader of the nationalists in the House of Representatives in 1951, and chair of the house committee on economic affairs. In 1952 he became a senator, and was appointed chair of the senate committee on domestic affairs. In this position he took responsibility for the sharp economic boom caused by an American economic loan.
