Togashi Mountain was the mountain where Kyuden Togashi was built. Togashi Mountain served as both a defense against the other clans, and as a spiritual test for those who sought to become tattooed monks, for climbing the mountain was not so much a physical task as a spiritual one. As one sought to climb, they would be tested regularly; they might drop some cherished possession and have to choose whether to go back for it or leave it behind in order to keep climbing. Other tests involve helping other travelers in their climb, perhaps sharing limited provisions with total strangers in order to pass. Those who passed this battery of tests would reach the summit, and Kyuden Togashi. [citation needed]
