Mohammed had been approached in 2001 by Moussa Zemmouri and Driss Elatellah in a Belgian mosque, and asked if he would take a cell phone for them, answer calls, and pass on any messages to them. In June 2001 he fielded three such calls from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, as well as a number of calls from Sami Essid.
