He was a passenger aboard Oceanic Flight 815 who did not survive the crash. When the plane split apart, his seat was thrown from the plane and into a spring of water deep in the island. His body was eventually discovered by Kate and Sawyer while they were swimming, along with the Halliburton case which was stored beneath his seat. After that, Paulo also discovered the bodies when he was swimming to find the missing script bag.
