Lieutenant Commander Andre Charvat was a male Human in Starfleet and was the assistant chief science officer aboard the USS Enterprise in 2268. When Andre Charvat was at Starfleet Academy, one of his instructors was Professor James Atheling, who inspired Charvat to teach at the Academy after graduation instead of signing aboard a starship. After many years of teaching, Charvat applied for starship service and was assigned aboard the Enterprise. (TOS novel: Planet of Judgment)
