The Tangier & Area Volunteer Fire Department was formed in the early 1980s. Initially, equipment was comprised of trailer pumps and equipment towed by personal vehicles. A fire station was built in 1988. In 1996, it and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
