When the government of Signet Mezzileen fell at the end of the Mezzilenic War, it was agreed that elections for a new Senate and a new Chancellor would be held as soon as possible. While acting Chancellor Harza Klim kept the government ticking over, the politicians positioned themselves for the elections to follow. It became clear early on that the Democratic Republican Party was likely to win the Senate and have its leader Arf Fey'lya elected Chancellor. Fey'lya's actions during the war had alienated himself from many of the moderates in the Senate and in the Jedi Order. The Jedi were determined that he would not be elected and approached the moderate Merix Valorum and ask him to stand against Fey'lya.
