Midshipman Forsyth was a young cadet in Starfleet Academy. In 2367 Forsyth was assigned to the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) for the summer session away from the Academy. While in Ten-Forward, Forsyth was thrilled to be challenged to a game of chess by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Because Picard was distracted by the conversation between Geordi La Forge and Harna Karish, he lost two matches to the cadet. Forsyth had become nervous for his wins. After giving a historical retrospective with one of his ancestors who had beaten Napoleon at chess, Picard complimented Forsyth on his chess game.
