Spartanburg, South Carolina was one of the towns Confederate President Jake Featherston and his entourage passed through on their retreat to the Confederate redoubt in the last days of the Second Great War. It was here that they boarded an Alligator in an attempt to overfly U.S. occupied territory, late at night, and head west. They escaped right before U.S. forces reached the city.
