The Squadron Commander is a senior pilot in Queen Azura's forces on the planet Mars, and is seen in the 1938 serial Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars. Also known as the Bomber Captain and the Commander of the Nitron Squadron, he is a loyal and faithful servant to Queen Azura. Only after her death does he learn that her rule was founded partly on deceit and treachery, when he discovers that the brother he had been told was killed had in fact been transformed into a Clay Person by Queen Azura and banished to the Valley of Desolation. With his brother restored to normality through the efforts of Flash Gordon, the Commander agrees to help Flash and becomes a vital ally in his quest to defeat Ming the Merciless.
