A number of Russian Jews emigrated to Novosevensk in the early 1920s. However, after a small-scale pogrom took place in 1932, in which an elderly Jewish woman was killed, the entire community decided to move to the settlement of Canterbury on American Island nearby. The synagogue was built in 1942, with Moshe Shkolnik as the first rabbi. Nowadays the synagogue survives, and is used by Jewish Seveners of many different backgrounds regularly. It was subject to some vandalism during the Lovian Civil War by anti-Semitic groups. Avrohom Spall is the current Chief Rabbi of the synagogue.
