Darth Maul was a male Zabrak who was a childhood friend of Qui-Gon Jinn. He was twisted by the Dark Side and soon became the apprentice to Darth Sidious. He was most known for terrorizing villages on Tatooine, however, never actually harmed anyone. He was assigned to kill Qui-Gon and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Naboo Crisis. He was defeated and returned in secret to help reconstruction after the conflict. Shortly after, he went in search of his childhood friend, hoping to seek reconciliation for attacking him and his apprentice on Naboo.
