Peter van Daan, the pseudonym of Peter Aron van Pels was already acquainted with Anne Frank when he and his family joined the Franks in their hiding place. Neither Peter not Anne relished the prospect of living with each other. When he joined the Franks in hiding, Peter was sixteen, and Anne Frank was thirteen. Anne's diary recounts how her initial feelings of dislike for the shy and awkward boy changed as she learned more about him and his feelings. Eventually they started a romance. She received her first kiss from him, but her infatuation with him began to wane as she questioned whether her feelings for him were genuine, or resulted from their shared confinement.
