A shiv, also known as a shank, was the slang term for any improvised bladed weapon. These weapons were commonly made by inmates in prisons across the galaxy. Shivs were often made from whatever the prisoner could find, be it pieces of glass, sharpened toothbrushes, blades from razors used for personal grooming, or items smuggled from another part of the prison, including knives.
