The 2005 Sony HD 500 was a Nextel Cup event held at California Speedway on September 4, 2005. Kyle Busch held off Greg Biffle in a green-white-checkered finish for Busch's first win. The win was a momumental first, with Busch's win being the youngest in Cup history. Points leader Tony Stewart finished 5th and continued a huge points lead, but the real heat was on. With one race to go in the Race for the Chase, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray held the transfer spots with Ryan Newman one marker out and Jeff Gordon some thirty points behind.
