The British determined Peenemünde's purpose in 1943, and subjected the base to heavy bombing as part of Operation Hydra. When Peenemünde was overrun by the Soviet Union in 1945, the base was already substantially destroyed. The USSR maintained a base there until it was turned over to East Germany in the 1950s. Today, it is home to Peenemünde Historical and Technical Information Centre.
