Miller was chosen 241st overall by the New York Rangers in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft and 132nd overall by the Vancouver Blazers in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft. After leaving the University of Minnesota, Miller opted to join the Calgary Cowboys (the relocated Blazers) and was a regular in the 1976-77 season. In 1980 he was traded to the Hartford Whalers and in 1980-81 enjoyed his best NHL season with 22 goals and 22 assists. He played another two seasons for the Whalers before retiring in 1983. He was also a member of the US team at the 1981 Canada Cup and 1977 and 1981 World Championships.
