However instead of transferring his soul into another person, Orochimaru will instead split a fragment of his soul and place it with another object. Doing so gives him "immortality" but should that object be destroyed that fragment of his soul will be lost forever. Orochimaru has known only to do this once and he briefly mentions a description of the object as being the only piece of his mother left.
