To attach a rat, the pole must first be wielded, then the player's pet cat must catch a rat. When caught, the player is given the option to attach it to the pole or leave it. An adult cat or wily cat are advised for this as they have greater success rates. Attaching six rats to the pole is required for the medium Varrock Task "With a Ten-foot Pole".
