Louis-Joseph Papineau saw what caused the Federation of Canada to fail, and with the help of the U.S. government (which was helping Canada rebuild) pushed for his "Confederation of Canada". It had a small federal government, with two almost self governing "protectorates" that had almost complete control over what they did. The Protectorates were split almost down the middle, with the Northern taking New Foundland and most of Quebec and the Southern, the rest. The protectorates were renamed Protectorate of Virong (Vee-wrong) and Quebec.
