The film was a box office success. Having been made on an estimated budget of $10,700,000, it went on to earn more than $76,000,000 at movie theaters in the United States. It spawned two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, as well as a barely-related TV series called Poltergeist: The Legacy. A reboot of the movie is currently in the works as of September 2014. Poltergeist was rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for adult situations, language and violence.
