In this book, Nate Wright prepares for another showdown against Jefferson in an annual ultimate Frisbee game known as the "Mud Bowl." In the process, Nate has to try to make peace with Randy Betancourt, cope with the possibility of moving away, and try to impress a new girl named Ruby Dinsmore, who Nate and Randy both have a crush on. Eventually, it becomes obvious that Ruby likes Nate, not Randy. In the end, P.S. 38 beats Jefferson in the thirty-eighth annual Mud Bowl and Nate doesn't end up moving. Apparently, Nate begins to date Ruby. Randy reveals that he is going through tough times, as his parents are divorcing and his grades are really bad. Nate eventually becomes good friends with Randy.
