Thirty miles east of Quito, Ecuador was selected as the site for the base of the American Tower. The site was selected to take advantage of the seven thousand feet of altitude that the Andes offered. That altitude and the solid granite foundation the mountain range also contributed to the selection of the site. The Tower is two miles in diameter at its base. This dimension tapers in gradually to a diameter of one mile at five miles in altitude.
