The pen later became important when Roger took it from Carolyn to return it to Burke, insisting that it was too extravagant a gift for a young lady to accept from a man (45). He lost the pen before meeting with Burke later that evening (47). The pen later reappeared when Victoria Winters found it in the sand at Lookout Point, near the place where Bill Malloy may have died (75). After the Sheriff took custody of it, the pen seemed to disappear. How it got to Lookout Point is explained only if we believe Roger's story.
