At the beginning of the film, Robotnik tells Sonic and the President that the Robot Generator had supposedly become unstable due to the increased electricity being generated and needed to be shutdown before dawn the next day or it would cause a massive explosion that would affect the entire planet. Sonic accepts the request for assistance and starts his journey to the Robotropolis with Tails.
