The first game to introduce RPG elements into the Mario franchise was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, developed by Square and released in 1996. The game has not received a direct sequel, but the two sub-series of Mario RPG games released in subsequent years, Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi, are considered to be its spiritual successors.
