In The Enchantress Returns, the Evil Enchantress Ezmia explains the story of the Souls in the Jars; five men whose souls she trapped in jars as revenge. One of them is the Pied Piper. His flute, used to chase all of the rats out of a town, was bewitched by Ezmia. Ezmia says she gave him the flute so he would not feel like he was less important than she was. Unfortunately, her plan does not work, and he eventually cheats on her, causing Ezmia to capture his soul in a jar.
