I only have access to i386 GNU/linux systems of the debian/ubuntu family. As far as I know the gist of this article should be relevant to other distributions or even other platforms but I have not been able to verify it. For clarity's sake the article does not distinguish between terminfo and termcap: they are functionally equivalent.
