Water, 'Sister and Wife Life-Giver', was a spirit-god of the Elan. The corresponding masculine spirit-god was known as Fire, 'Brother and Husband Life-Giver'. When a member of the Elan died, these two spirit-gods, Water...Life-Giver and Fire...Life-Giver, were ritually conjoined and became 'Life-Taker'--whose purpose it was to weigh the merits of the dead and to decide on the fate of the dead Elan's soul.
