Ataraxia names the peace of mind or happiness that is the goal of the good life as understood by the Greek philosopher Epicurus and his followers. This condition may be achieved through both individual economic and physical security and withdrawal from public life. The cost of adopting this philosophy that it may leave the believer unprepared for rapid change.
