Ryoma joins the team as a first year while Tezuka is the captain. Seeing potential in Ryoma he later tells him he is the pillar of the team - Tezuka is one of the few players that Ryoma respects and wants to beats, in other words he sees Tezuka differently from most other players he encounters.
