Chanute Air Force Base was located near Rantoul, Illinois and operated by the United States Air Force. In 1988, Colonel Abraham Steiger was scheduled to speak at the base on aircraft safety. While en route, he decided to stop in Colorado and speak with Dirk Pitt about the aircraft wreckage he discovered in Charles Smith's cabin.
