The Hatchet Lake Fire Department was formed in the mid-1960s and its first station built in 1966. In 1991, Hatchet Lake and the Terence Bay Volunteer Fire Department merged to form the Prospect Road & District Volunteer Fire Department. Five years later, all of the fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated into the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
