L. Frank Baum was fond of inserting new characters into films who never appeared in the books. Mewel the Mule was one such character added into the plots of the the films, His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz and The Patchwork Girl of Oz. Earlier, an unnamed mule appeared in the 1910 film, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This is commonly accepted to have been Mewel's introduction and entry to Oz.
