Heat-Seeking is a technology for automatic targeting of missiles. It is inferior to the friend or foe system. Heat-seeking missiles (generally abbreviated as HS) cannot distinguish between enemies and friendlies. They fly in the direction they have been shot and look for the closest heat source to become their target, usually a ship's engine. If the target outmaneuvres the missile, the missile looks for the next heat source to fly to. Outmaneuvering a HS missile and making it lock to the attacker's ship is considered a dogfighting masterpiece.
